Cleaning Your Home with Branch Basics

WHAT DO YOU MEAN TRADITIONAL CLEANERS AREN’T SAFE?

In all of the hooplah and hubbub surrounding the most recent scandal with the detection of benzene in Johnson & Johnson sunscreen, I thought it would be an ideal time to share information on other ways to clean up your products at home! The reality is that household and beauty products are entirely unregulated, and the presence of a green leaf on a package or “100% natural” ultimately means nothing. It’s marketing, and it works. We buy those products, because we think they have somehow improved upon the ingredients but actually it’s just a new-label-same-product kinda situation. It works, their sales will skyrocket. It’s a sham, it makes us sick.

From the American Cancer Society page: “Benzene has been shown to cause chromosome changes in bone marrow cells in the lab. (The bone marrow is where new blood cells are made.) Such changes are commonly found in human leukemia cells.” This is but ONE chemical in a land of chemicals that are allowed in household and beauty products sold on shelves to families. You can spend hours googling the garbage on the back of each label in your home. Or… you can do a total overhaul, throw it all out, and start over with clean, safe, and affordable cleaners.

When the ingredients label is a mile long, just say no. When you can’t pronounce any of the words on a label, just say no. When there are WARNING alerts on the label, just say no. Say it with me… JUST SAY NO.

WHY DOES IT MATTER

It matters, because there is a direct and documented impact on our health and the health of our families. Chemicals allowed in household and beauty products are hormone-disrupting, linked to various types of cancer, and are associated with infertility. We have to set up our children for success, not cancer.

These are the products on the shelves at Walmart, Target, Kroger, City Market, Safeway. These are brands that we have been raised to trust, because it’s what has always been used. It’s Coppertone, Babyganics, Neutrogena, Aveeno, etc. It’s Lysol, window/glass cleaner, air fresheners (anything with the ingredient mysteriously labeled “fragrance”), laundry or dishwashing detergents, furniture polish, drain cleaners, etc. It’s most of what we think we know. Do you feel triggered yet?

I believe that we have to be the gatekeepers to our home. That we have to protect our families by being specific and careful about what we buy and use in the home and on our bodies. We have to vote with our dollars to support companies that are clean, non-toxic, cruelty-free and family safe.

WHERE SHOULD YOU START

I started with Branch Basics, and that’s what I wanted to focus on today. I ordered the premium starter kit which contained:

  • The Concentrate
  • Oxygen Boost
  • Reusable Plastic All-Purpose, Bathroom and Streak-Free Bottles
  • Reusable Plastic Foaming Wash Bottle
  • Reusable Plastic Laundry Bottle

The premium starter kit contains all of the bottles you need to make the different types of cleaners and the concentrate with which to mix with water to make them. One stop shop.

I’ll admit that I was very skeptical. I love a good Windex spray. I associate the smells of traditional cleaners with… well, cleanliness. But I’ll also be the first to admit that I have been pleasantly surprised with my new, non-toxic cleaners. They clean just as well, and I have peace of mind that they are not harmful for me, my baby, my husband, or my pets. In fact, the smell of traditional cleaners give me a headache now, and I am haunted by the residue that I know is left on the surfaces they were cleaned with. I’m watching Theo run around licking the floor at random and then sticking objects in the toilet and then into his mouth, and I feel relieved that there isn’t bleach in the toilet or cleaner on the floor that may cause a serious reaction. We can’t micromanage every part of our kiddos’ days, and this is one way that we can easily keep them safe.

THE BENEFITS OF BRANCH BASICS

  • Human safe
  • Plant-based
  • Fragrance free
  • No harmful preservatives
  • Not tested on animals
  • Non-GMO
  • Bio-degradable

The window cleaner works wonderfully on our glass and mirrors around the house. The all-purpose cleaner has been phenomenal for all of our surfaces including counters, tables, and floors. I use the bathroom cleaner on all surfaces in the bathroom including toilet, showers, and counters. The foaming wash sits next to our sink for washing hands. And I started using the laundry detergent a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with the results! So 10/10 recommend. One kit to get rid of all the junk currently in your house. Replace it with all you need that is clean and safe for you and your family.

  8. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
