Vegan Christmas Treats

holiday

Up first in my weekly holiday blog series is a topic that is sure to please everyone… sweets! Holidays often center around delicious, homemade food. This year I challenge you with one of the following vegan christmas treats recipes or veganizing your own! To do the latter, I’ve included some tips at the bottom of this post to help you update your own recipes!

Here you will find links to recipes, specifically vegan christmas treats, that we have made for many years and truly love! I would not steer you wrong. In case you want to use your own recipe and just play around with making substitutions for the animal parts, scroll past my recommended recipes to the bottom and check out those hot tips! Like anything else, if you do it enough times, it becomes second nature.

Here we go!

Homemade Fudgy Brownies

Brownies are such an easy dessert to bring for family gatherings, pot-luck style events, or just to have around the house. Just thinking about a warm house that smells like fresh brownies makes my mouth water! This is a super simple vegan recipe for brownies that is luxuriously chocolatey. You’ll see that she substitutes flax eggs (my favorite way to replace chicken eggs) which also gives this recipe a nutritious boost!

You can find the link for the brownies here!

Warm Apple Pie

This warm apple pie with a buttery crumble top is a staple in our home for special occasions and holidays! This is a tried and true recipe that I have made for many, many years. Eric’s favorite dessert is apple pie, and we also like this recipe because of the buttery, cinnamon crumble on top. Our favorite brand of vegan butter is Earth Balance, and it’s a 1:1 substitution for cow butter.

You can find the link for this favorite warm apple pie recipe here!

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is my very own recipe that is a hit amongst my friends and family! I get many requests to make these when we have visitors, and I enjoy gifting them whenever possible. I have to fend Eric off of them with a spatula when I make them for other people. If you dare to eat one, you are in trouble. You can never eat just one.

You’ll see in this recipe that I’ve substituted Earth Balance butter for traditional cow butter that you find in recipes.

Chocolate Walnut Banana Bread

Who doesn’t love banana bread? Now, add mini chocolate chips and walnuts and thank me later. I don’t think I’ve made regular banana bread since trying it this way many years ago! The chocolate chips add just a pop of sweetness, and the walnuts give the sweet bread a satisfying and nourishing crunch. I’ll share a recipe here that will give you the base for the bread, and then you will hopefully take my advice and add 1/2 cup walnuts and 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips.

There are several brands that major grocery store chains carry that will alert you to their vegan-friendly attraction. One of my favorites, Enjoy Life brand, specifically states that they are allergen friendly. Just check the ingredients label, skim all the way to the bottom where it states “Contains:..” and there you will find allergen information. In case you didn’t know, yes egg and milk are allergens.

You can find the link for banana bread here! Don’t forget to add walnuts and chocolate chips!

Gingerbread Snickerdoodles

ginger cookies

Speaking of cookies. Holy cow. My girlfriend made these at a get together at her place a few weeks ago, and they were heavenly! I quickly lost count of how many I consumed, and admittedly, I have no regrets. I pinned the recipe, so that I can enjoy them again and again in the future! If you are looking for a soft, chewy, snickerdoodle cookie with flare, look no further than here!

You can find the recipe for these dreamy cookies here!

Tips for Substitutions

Eggs

1 flax egg = 1 chicken egg

Click here for my recipe on how to make a flax egg!

This is the best method for keeping your baked goods fluffy, and you add your own nutrition bonus points because of the ground flaxseed.

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce = 1 chicken egg

Before I made flax eggs, this is how I substituted for eggs in baked goods. This works fine for things like cookies, but it is not my preferred method for foods that you want to be fluffy (i.e. cupcakes, cake, brownies, etc.)

Milk

Plant milk is a perfectly acceptable substitution for cow milk, and often times works much better! With any plant milk, I recommend buying organic, original/plain, and unsweetened!

  • Almond milk is thin and the most mildly flavored of all the plant milks.
  • Coconut milk (full fat) is decadent, rich, and creamy.
  • Soy milk is the most versatile in my opinion, and the one I use most often. Soy milk is a good middle ground between almond and coconut milk.
  • Oat milk is another very creamy option. This is great in coffees as well, simply substitute oat milk for cow milk at your favorite local coffee shop and prepare to be amazed.

Butter

Earth Balance butter (or any other brand of vegan butter) can be substituted for cow butter in a 1:1 ratio. You don’t even have to do math!

Summary

That’s all for today! This is my first post of (my very first) four post holiday series. Future topics will be kept a surprise until you see them magically appear as an announcement on my social media or if you follow my blog closely for new posts.

Desserts and sweet treats can still be decadent, rich, savory, and sweet without including animal products. I challenge you to try any of these recipes or substitutions, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

The TRUE test is cleaning up your desserts and sweets without telling your family and friends about it. Let them participate in a truly blind taste test and then reveal the treats are vegan! They will be surprised, and you will be pleased that your staple recipes and favorites are just as delicious as before.
