When I first became vegan, almost 5 years ago, I knew 0 vegan people in real life. I knew 1 vegetarian. Over the last few years, it has made my heart swell to see awareness brought to this very important, very controversial topic. We have to talk about the hard things. With that being said, there is still ambiguity around the differences between those who are vegetarian, vegan, and plant-based.
Goodness, the number one question from most is WHY. Well, it depends on who you ask and that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. I’ve considered writing a post detailing the reasons that I became and remain committed to a vegan lifestyle, and maybe one day I’ll put my thoughts on paper (or computer screen). A person’s ‘why’ is very personal, and while there are overlapping similarities amongst these veggie people, every person’s reason is different. Different is good, and different is human.
I am here today to help clarify the differences in lifestyle between those who are vegetarian, vegan, and plant-based.
Let’s get to the meat of the topic. Ha.
Vegan
This is me. As a vegan person, I will happily and adamantly insist that my food does not contain any type of animal product. This means meat (fish is meat before you even ask), dairy, or any kind of animal by-product like gelatin. What about something like chicken or beef broth? Well, if any part of an animal was boiled in it then that’s going to be a hard pass. A vegan person does not eat animal products.
Veganism is a lifestyle. This means that avoiding animal products extends beyond consumption of food. Animal parts and products are avoided in food, beauty and cleaning products, clothing, and so on.
If a household or beauty product contains animals parts or products, a vegan person will avoid buying and using it. If furniture or piece of clothing contains something derived from an animal like wool or leather, a vegan person will avoid buying and using it. If animals are tested or experimented on in the process of developing the product, a vegan person will avoid it as well.
Please, do not be overwhelmed. I became vegan, and I had a leather couch. I continued to sit on it and watch TV until we bought a new one when that one was worn out (gasp). I had a face cream from a beauty brand that tested on animals, I used it all up and then switched to a vegan brand. The goal is not perfection, the goal is awareness.
Animals are some of the most vulnerable beings on our planet. As humans have grown and evolved over time, the exploitation of animal bodies has become shockingly cruel and unnecessary. The goal, again, is awareness. Be an educated consumer, know where your food and products are coming from, know what is in your food and products, make more humane choices, and vote with your dollars by buying clean and cruelty-free products from companies who prioritize that amongst their values.
You’ll be happy to know I have many friends who are vegan now. Many of which transitioned because I used my online platform as a place for advocacy and bringing awareness to the plight of animals. You can do the same!
Examples of what this looks like:
- Macaroni and cheese made with a cashew-based cheese
- Various kinds of creamy thai curries made with coconut milk and veggies
- Burrito bowls with brown rice, roasted veggies, and crispy tofu
- Oatmeal for breakfast with ground flaxseed, berries, and walnuts
- Cashew-based unsweetened yogurt with granola and fruit
- Tempeh stir fry with quinoa
- Blackened tofu with cheesy grits (cheesy from nutritional yeast) and roasted veggies
Vegetarian
Up next, vegetarians! A vegetarian is going to pass on animal meat and flesh as well!
Vegetarians DON’T eat meat. Vegetarians DO eat dairy products and possibly animal by-products like gelatin as well.
Many, many people who seek to remove animals from their plates start with a vegetarian diet. It’s the most simple, just don’t eat meat. Over time, many vegetarians will also slowly remove dairy and be cognizant of animal byproducts like gelatin. It’s an individual and personal choice. I think it’s great!
Why would a person choose to be a vegetarian? Well, ask the vegetarian. It may be for moral, religious, health or other reasons.
Examples of what this looks like:
- Creamy vegetable pasta made with regular cow milk or cheese derived from cow milk
- Ice cream derived from cow milk
- Full fat yogurt derived from cow milk
- Use of butter in recipes derived from cow milk
- Veggie tacos with shredded cheese and sour cream derived from cow milk
Plant-based
Arguably, this is the most clean of the three categories!
A plant-based person does not eat animal meat, dairy, or animal by-products like gelatin. Much like a vegan, right?
Unlike a vegan, a plant-based person does not eat any kind of processed food. I love tofu, which is processed. So, I don’t really identify as a plant-based person, because I also know that I love BBQ chips and vegan cheeses.
Vegan alternatives such as with vegan meats, cheeses, or dairy alternatives that are not made from whole foods are not included in a plant-based person’s diet… because, you guessed it, they are processed foods.
So, basically, a plant-based person eats a diet of foods sourced from whole plant foods like vegetables, grains, nuts, fruits, etc. This is not as restricting as it may sound! There are entire cookbooks made up of plant-based food recipes that are rich, savory, and nutrient-dense. Those who eat a plant-based diet enjoy many, many health benefits not found in the diets of those who eat SAD (standard American diet).
Examples of what this looks like:
- Vegetable lasagna
- French toast with berry drizzle (100% whole grain bread)
- Hummus with homemade crackers
- Bean chili
- Black bean burgers
- Veggie quesadillas
- Various kinds of curry
- Rice and bean bowls with your choice of roasted veggies
- Stuffed sweet potatoes
What if…
What if a vegan person eats a handful of jelly beans that contain gelatin? So what. The goal is awareness, not perfection.
What if a vegetarian orders soup that’s made from chicken broth? So what. The goal is awareness, not perfection.
What if a plant-based person eats tofu at a friend’s house? So what. The goal is awareness, not perfection.
Research demonstrates time and time again that the more plant-based a person’s diet becomes, the greater the health benefits they experience. This is science. This is documented with rigorous research studies. This is not speculation, gaslighting, or conspiracy.
This means eating less meat and dairy. It’s the hard truth.
I thrive on being a resource for those in my network who are interested in eating more plant-based and creating less demand for harming animals. In many ways, it’s the reason I have created this platform and hope to nourish and grow it over time. You will not find judgment, shaming, or criticism here, regardless of your diet. You will find support and mentorship from this community.
For some, a starting place is simply to remove meat from one meal per week. For others, it’s enjoying a Meatless Monday. We all have different lifestyles, daily routines, and eating habits which means we are all starting from a different place in our life.
