5 New Tips for Managing Mom Weight

Moms are always looking for ways to lose weight and regain that pre-pregnancy body. It is not rocket science! The truth is… the more good stuff you add to your plate, the less room you have for the bad stuff. It is about adding in foods that will work for your body to keep a balanced and stable equilibrium within your body. If you make room for the good stuff, there will be less space for the bad stuff and vice versa. Today I wanted to share 5 new tips for managing mom weight, tips that are healthy and realistic, to help you be more comfortable in your body!

The dieting industry making billions of dollars every year trying to convince you that there is a perfect pill, diet, or exercise routine that offers the solution to your desires. Ultimately, though, these solutions are not sustainable and usually not healthy long-term either. What if it is as simple as understanding how certain foods affect your body and simply being intentional about which ones to make room for and which ones to eat less of? 

Our bodies are smart. By focusing on providing nutrient-dense foods when it is time to eat, you give yourself the best chance of having a well-balanced weight.

Daily Green Drink 

Many of us have seen the infamous green drinks and watched in aghast as people chug them. I was one of those people. But recently, I realized that really I should be supplementing my already pretty diet with better daily habits and routines that nourish and energize me. Eat Less Meat

Yeah, I mean it. It’s a weird thing to say when so much of popular media just tells you to eat chicken and it’s fine. It’s not though. Let me be blunt, meat makes you fat. Vegetarians, on average, eat 500 calories less per day than meat eaters. Vegetarians eat dairy, they just don’t eat meat. When people try to lose weight, the calorie restriction is literally 500 calories per day. Coincidence? No. Meat is loaded with saturated fat and animal protein that your body cannot efficiently process and get rid of. This means that food sits around in your gut far longer than it should be, and your body stores all of that extra saturated fat. Meat offers you no fiber or phytonutrients which further slows the digestive process. You’ll find that as people age, they naturally eat less meat because our bodily systems become even less capable of processing the weight of animal flesh. “Plantbased” has become a hot buzzword in the last few years, and I would encourage you to stick with foods that don’t even have an ingredients label.. like in the produce section. Regarding those of you who doubt the benefits of plant-based protein, Google should be able to help you with that. Protein is important, but food is a package deal. Plant based protein (beans, tofu, lentils, etc) give you protein, fiber, nutrients, and more. Your body is more easily able to process these foods and absorb the nutrients they provide without increasing your risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, certain types of cancers, and more. Your risk of those disease processes increases every time you take a bite of animal flesh. Get rid of it. Above, I mentioned the benefits that vegetarians enjoy as a result of not eating meat. Vegan, on average, enjoy an even lower BMI and even more health benefits that vegetarians and meat eaters. The less animals you eat, the better you will fair overall with your weight management and health outcomes. For so many reasons, eating less meat is one of my easiest and favorite new tips for managing mom weight.

Eat Salad Before Lunch or Dinner

I’ve never been a salad lover which most people find ironic due to my lifestyle as a vegan person. But it’s true. I likely never touched a salad until I was in my mid-twenties. Just this year, with my efforts as a novice gardener, I discovered just how much I enjoyed a fresh salad before lunch or dinner with my meal. There are some people in this world who may enjoy a salad as a meal, but I am not one of them. I am saying, enjoy a small salad WITH your meal. You’ll find that the extra nutrient boost you get with a bowl of greens helps you eat a more reasonable portion size of your dinner and keeps you satiated far longer. A salad is not empty calories, the nutrient rich greens and additions you add to your salad give your body extra goodies to help digest and dispose of your food properly. Salads boost your immune system, keep you satiated longer, and give you important plant nutrients to support overall health. One study found that people who eat a small salad before their dinner meal felt fuller for longer and ate less food the next day. They ate less food not because they were hungry and cutting back food, they ate less food because they were more satiated. My favorite way to buy greens is to pick up a box of organic 50:50 salad mix each week on my grocery run. Eric and I both enjoy many, many salads from one box, and we find that we almost never have to throw out greens as long as we make sure to each 1 salad per day each.

 Eat More Fruit 

This is another popular topic, and one that you may have mixed feelings about. I’m here to release your negative and preconceived notions surrounding fruit. Fruit is safe, healthy, nutrient dense, and good for you. Eat. More. Fruit. Studies have long demonstrated that people who eat fruit daily live longer and healthier lives than those who do not. 2-3 servings of fruit is recommended, and you should find the most vibrant and colorful fruits. The reddest apple. The darkest grapes. The deepest, darkest berries. The color of the fruit tells you how antioxidant-rich the fruit is, pay attention and choose according to vibrancy and color. Fruit is packed with fiber, helps with inflammation, and gives you energy. You will be more nutritionally balanced, and you will have more success managing your weight when you eat several servings every day.

Incorporate Ground Flaxseed Daily 

Flax seed has been found to have so many health benefits that I simply don’t have the space to talk about them all here. Weight loss and management is one of them. You can buy organic, ground flaxseed at any grocery store, and you’ll find that it’s affordable. It’s also flavorless. I do my best to eat one tablespoon of flaxseed every day based on Dr. Michael Gregers recommendation. You can find more info about him by visiting this link. Ground flaxseed is a nutrient rich food that offers fiber, loaded with omega-3s, offers a great source of lignans, and more. You will find that you stay satiated longer which helps with your weight management overall. You can eat ground flaxseed in oatmeal, cereal, smoothies, baked goods, and more. You can also make flax eggs out of ground flaxseed which adds more nutritional value to your cooking. It is one of my most favorite, secret ways to feed my family more nutrients. I also find that I feel slimmer, satiated, and balanced longer when I eat this food.

“Researchers in Hawaii tried putting people on more of a traditional, Hawaiian diet with all the plant foods they could eat, unlimited quantities of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. And, the study subjects lost an average of seventeen pounds in just twenty-one days. Calorie intake dropped by 40 percent, but not because they were eating less food. They lost seventeen pounds in three weeks eating more food, in excess of four pounds a day. How could that be? Because whole plant foods tend to be so calorically dilute, you can stuff yourself without getting the same kind of weight gain. They lost seventeen pounds in three weeks eating more food.”

You see, a whole foods plant-based diet just may be the key to your weight management- never counting calories, never staring at the scale, never struggling with feeling bad after you eat. I want moms to be empowered, to feel good, to be happy with what their bodies have done for them, and to nourish themselves with real, whole foods so that they can be optimally healthy.
