One of our most favorite family hobbies is hiking! And don’t be scared, hiking with a baby becomes easier each time you go, practice makes perfect after all. We try to get out into the mountains at least once/week. Theo loves his hiking pack and jibber jabbers, naps, snacks, and plays while we all enjoy our outside time together.
Hiking with a baby is great exercise for us, a wonderful sensory experience for Theo, and a fun bonding activity with our family and friends.
Today I thought it would be helpful to compile our hiking essentials list and make it official! This list has lived scribbled on a dirty sheet of paper for months. Eric prettied up for me, and I thought it might be helpful for other families wanting to get outside more with their littles, and especially those wanting to hike with a baby!
This is a pretty basic list but will help you be prepared for a simple day hike.
We usually consider a few things when choosing family-friendly hikes. In general, we choose hikes that 2-5 miles in distance. If there is a pretty stopping point halfway, we will take Theo out of his pack and let him play while we picnic. He gets a snack and diaper change before going back in the pack, and I usually offer to nurse as well. Other times, especially for shorter hikes, we hike straight through without stopping.
Here is a basic hiking essentials list to get you started!

- Fanny pack or backpack for parent not carrying baby

- Pacifier + clip
- Cap or beanie (for cold weather)

- Diaper bag (leave in car)
- ThinkBaby Sunscreen

HIKING TIPS
- Pack snacks/PB&J’s for the hike. You never know when you or the kiddo(s) will get hungry.
- Always have more water than you think you need.
- We keep 1 diaper and change of clothes in the storage compartment of our Osprey carrier. Just in case. If you are wearing your baby in something like a soft structured carrier, then have your partner hike with a backpack and store your things in there.
- Bring a first aid kit for you and the family. We also have a first aid kit with pet items, like tweezers, in case of unfortunate paw incidents.
- If you are hiking with a baby, nurse or give a bottle right before you take off hiking.
- Hang 1 dangly toy from the pack and 1 pacifier with a clip.
- Keep snacks readily accessible to hand your baby a veggie stick, cracker, etc. as you go along in case they start to get restless.
