Yes, your vagina is drier. No, you are not imagining things. Postpartum sex is different.

There are many things we don’t talk about postpartum that I believe are critical for a new mother to expect and for her partner to be understanding of, namely postpartum sex. Giving birth is one of the most intimate experiences a couple can have together, and the healing process and bodily changes that occur after are of importance to note as well. Today, I would like to address insufficient vaginal lubrication as a common part of the postpartum experience and the implications that can have for the quality of a mothers sex life with her partner. Gasp… I said vaginal and sex in the same sentence, interested yet?
Recently, I wrote content for a pelvic floor physical therapy website, and I learned so much about different conditions that may occur postpartum, aside from the ones that I had already experienced myself. The wonderful thing about this writing project was that I also learned how a pelvic floor PT could HELP.
That’s right, there is help for many common experiences a woman has postpartum, and we all need to be talking more about it.
This is 2021, and our healthcare system needs to catch up with best practices for women’s healthcare. Shall I say it louder for the ones in the back?
WHAT IT IS
Insufficient vaginal lubrication means dry vagina …Drier than normal? Drier than before having a baby? More difficulty ‘getting wet’ if you will. Ladies, this is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. This 👏🏼 IS 👏🏼 common 👏🏼
One study estimates that 33% of women report decreased sexual satisfaction because of insufficient vaginal lubrication. Essentially, this lack of lubrication is caused by hormonal changes. After having a baby *and especially if you are breast feeding*, you have much lower amounts of estrogen circulating in your body. Your body needs estrogen to produce lubrication.
Less estrogen = less lubrication = discomfort with sex
DUDES
Even if you don’t have a vagina, you can still imagine that having a drier vagina during sexual intercourse would not lend itself to pleasure. If you are a man hoping to have sex with your partner who has a vagina, run to your closest grocery store and grab a water-based lube. Or, throw this one in your amazon cart. She will thank you, and it’s the appropriate/necessary thing to do.
NURSING MOMS
The point is that as long as you are nursing, you may experience a drier vagina as you continue to have lower amounts of estrogen.
What are the next steps you should take then?
- Explain this to your partner. Show them this post. Have an open, honest conversation about how you can be the most comfortable and enjoy sex with them the most. You’ll find that having these conversations will bring you closer together and increase the quality of your experiences together as well.
- Buy a water-based lube. Here, throw this one linked in your amazon cart. Oil-based are not recommended, because they may damage latex if you are using condoms. Oil-based lubricants may also increase your risk of an infection, because oil doesn’t rinse off as easily as water. Water-based lube is easier to rinse off, does not damage contraceptive methods such as condoms, and has more versatile uses. Like… get creative if you want.
- Use the water-based lube during sexual interactions.
- Find a pelvic floor physical therapist (PFPT). This type of therapy is outpatient, and most insurances reimburse at least some of the cost. You can call yours directly and find out what exactly that would look like for you based on your insurance plan. Make the time. This is the definition of self-care. Perhaps you do have insufficient vagina lubrication, great now you know why. But… perhaps also you have scar tissue from perineal tearing or an episiotomy? A PFPT will do an evaluation to determine if there are other factors contributing to your symptoms and treat you accordingly to help.
