Yes, you need it.
When I was pregnant, everything I read recommended baby wearing! There are so many benefits, and I remember thinking how sweet it would be to have your baby comfortably settled into a wrap on your body for warmth and comfort. Enter Theo. This dude was not having it. I walk, a lot. I hike, a lot. I’m active, a lot. The most reasonable solution to still participating in these things postpartum was to, you guessed it, wear the baby. I put him in the carrier, he screamed. I consulted with friends who wore babies, he screamed. I adjusted here and there, he screamed. Finally, I asked my doctor, she just looked at me with pity and told me to keep trying. So I did. And suddenly, he was only upset at the beginning of getting strapped in. Soon, we were walking around the block and hiking without issue. If you’re baby doesn’t love it at the beginning, don’t give up! Make sure your baby is comfortable, and they are correctly positioned. You can try pairing the carrier with sitting and bouncing on a ball, swaying, singing, butt patting, shushing, whatever your baby likes, and eventually they will realize it is a good thing! I did all of the things I just recommended and tried at least one time/day. I would go to the bathroom mirror and let him see himself in the carrier, which he really liked also. Some babies love it right away… if that’s you, give your baby a high five. If it’s not, don’t give up. There is hope!

- Prevents the baby from having a flat head due to laying on their back for prolonged periods of time

- Rocking/rhythmic movements from mom’s (or dad’s) natural movements while wearing
- You can breast feed while baby is in carrier
- Enhanced visual and auditory alertness
- Promotes early language development
- Mom (or dad) gets to be hands-free

WHAT KIND OF CARRIER?
Now, don’t be like me. I bought 2 soft structured carriers before finally buying the Ergo. I wish I had it from the beginning! I had a few other friends who had babies at the same time, and they all had Ergos. I just thought I could buy a cheaper one and still have the same benefits, but it really didn’t work out that way. He quickly outgrew the first one, which was an off-brand from Amazon. I bought a second off-brand carrier, and it was very much like the first. Finally, I bought the Ergo. I ended up spending more money than if I had just bought the Ergo from the beginning. You might also consider adding these 2 different styles of baby carriers to your baby registry. People love to buy these as gifts, because they know you will use the heck out of them!
Now, when they are tiny and new, the wrap-style carriers do a better job of keeping them supported against your body. But as they get bigger and start wanting to look around and practice their head control, I enjoyed switching to a soft structured carrier. Here are pictures of what I’m talking about…
I recommend watching YouTube videos to learn how to wrap yourself and then add the baby in. Practice it a few times with help from someone until you get the hang of it. Here is a good video.
Soft Structured Carrier:
Same recommendation here as far as watching YouTube videos to learn how to put it on and get it adjusted. Then practice putting baby in with help from someone else for safety (as far as having extra hands to help support your babe while you get the hang of it). Here is a good video.
I can’t emphasize enough how much you will want/need this as a new mom! I used to read a lot of mom boards in my fourth trimester, following what worked for moms and what didn’t. I can’t tell you how many times I read “I got a carrier, and my baby is so much happier now!”
Naturally, we are carry mammals! That means our babies instinctively know that safety and survival hinges on being close to mom. This is one easy way that you can satisfy that need and hopefully help your baby be more comfortable while you go about your day.
